Introduction

A good college student hoverboard, the Hover-1 Ultra is equipped with essential safety features and sturdy dual-motor capable of up to 7 mph and a 12-mile range. It may not be the fanciest hoverboard out there, especially because it doesn’t have Bluetooth speakers or an app, but it has other important features most riders want.

Range & Speed

Hover-1 Ultra 500W motor

The range and speed of the Hover-1 Ultra are pretty good, especially considering the relatively affordable price. At top speed, it can go 7 mph, which may not seem fast, but when you’re actually on the hoverboard, it will definitely feel fast enough. If you’re new to hoverboards, this speed will be just fine.

For range, the Hover-1 Ultra can go a max of 12 mph in “ideal conditions.” That means the rider is on the lighter side, they’re riding on smooth, flat ground, and they’re going at a moderate (not max) speed. When you go up hills, the board can travel 17-degree inclines. With its range and speed, this hoverboard is a good choice for riding around your neighborhood for fun, going across college campuses, or running quick chores.

Construction

The Hover-1 Ultra is built with dual 250-watt motors for a total of 500 watts. The motors can be operated independently or with both feet for smooth braking and turning. The battery is lithium-ion with 36 volts.

It takes a max of 4 hours to charge fully. As for weight, the hoverboard is about 25 pounds and can carry a rider up to 220 pounds. At a minimum, a rider should be at least 45 pounds, or the hoverboard won’t activate its self-balancing.

The Hover-1 Ultra’s wheels are 6.5-inches, indicating that this hoverboard is not meant for rough terrain or off-roading. You would need bigger wheels for that. The Ultra’s tires are non-pneumatic and solid, which means they are not filled with air and won’t need pumping. The disadvantage, though, is that airless tires tend to make for a rougher ride.

Safety

The main selling point of this hoverboard is all its safety features. It’s fully UL-certified, which is a must for any safe hoverboard, and it has a battery shield for fire and overheat-protection.

It’s also water-resistant. Note that water-resistant does not mean waterproof, so don’t submerge the hoverboard. If riding in low light, there are LED lights on the front for visibility.

Be sure only to use the hoverboard charger cord that came with your hoverboard and never leave the hoverboard charging overnight.

Customer Service

On the Hover-1 website, under the Support and Troubleshooting tab, you can select your hoverboard and access a FAQ guide on various troubleshooting issues, product manuals, repair and replacement guides, and more. You can also directly submit a ticket to have a customer service rep address a specific issue.

According to the Hover-1 site, all hoverboards have a 120-day limited part and labor warranty. It covers defects with the motor, battery, motherboards, lights, controller, and gyroscopic sensor.

Downsides

The main downside to the Ultra is there are no app or Bluetooth speaker capabilities. That means you can’t control the hoverboard with your phone or see stats like your speed, distance traveled, etc.

There are battery indicators on the board, but a lot of people like to have that information right in their hands. When riding, keep an eye on your battery indicator, so you don’t end up stranded somewhere.

Green means the battery is above 50%, while red means it’s down to 20% or lower, and the hoverboard needs to be charged.

I really liked these cool and intuitive battery indicators.

Who Should Buy The Hover-1 Ultra?

Hover-1 appears to be marketing this board primarily to college students who want a quick way to get around campus or explore their area.

It doesn’t have the construction or tire size for off-roading, so it’s definitely intended for an urban or suburban ride.

At under $300 (and sometimes under $200, if it’s on sale) it’s good for students on a budget or beginners who aren’t sure if they’re going to love a hoverboard.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a fully UL-certified, safe hoverboard without any frills, you’ll be happy with the Hover-1 Ultra hoverboard. While it doesn’t have extra features like an app or Bluetooth speakers, it does have a pair of sturdy motors that give you a max speed of 7 mph and a 12-mile range.

All in all, that’s about 4 hours of ride time per battery charge. This hoverboard is a good choice for college students who want a more interesting way to get around campus or for anyone who doesn’t need a board for long commutes and is cool with quick, fun trips.

The Ultra doesn’t quite make our Best Hoverboards of 2024 list, but it is a budget-friendly option – especially for kids and beginners.
