One thing above all, UL 2272 certification. It covers the entire electrical system, battery, charger and all, and it is the reason modern hoverboards do not make the news the way early ones did. Nearly every board in our catalog carries it, but ultra-cheap no-name listings sometimes do not, and no discount justifies an uncertified battery in your home. Always charge with the charger that came in the box.

6.5 inch wheels suit smooth floors, driveways and lighter riders, which is why most kids boards use them. 8.5 inch handles sidewalks and rougher pavement better, and 10 inch boards with inflatable tires give the smoothest ride outdoors. You can filter by wheel size in the hoverboard finder to match the board to where it will actually be ridden.

Buy comfortably above the rider's weight, not at it. Kids boards often cap around 120 to 180 lbs, while adult-ready boards run 220 lbs and up. Riding at or over the limit strains the motors, shortens range and can void the warranty, so a bigger rider should skip the smallest bargain boards entirely.

Most manage 3 to 7 miles in the real world, less with a heavier rider, hills or cold weather. That is fine for the driveway and the park, but nobody should buy a hoverboard expecting commuter range. If distance matters, prioritize boards with larger batteries and 10 inch wheels.

Kids do best on lighter 6.5 inch boards with modest speed, and many include training modes and app speed caps. Adults need the higher weight limits and bigger wheels of full-size boards, or the ride feels cramped and underpowered.
