Hub-drive boards dominate the budget end of the deals here, and for flat pavement commutes they are great, quiet, low maintenance and cheaper. Belt and gear drives cost more but bring the torque for hills, higher top speeds and swappable wheels. Match the drivetrain to your terrain first, then look at the price.

The spec that matters most is one that never appears on the sale banner, the quality of the ESC and remote. Smooth, predictable acceleration and braking is what keeps you on the board, and no-name boards with jerky control are where riders get hurt. Stick to established brands with real support and spare parts, even if the discount is smaller.

Buy for the ground you actually ride. Small urethane street wheels are lighter, cheaper and fine for smooth pavement, while big pneumatic all-terrain wheels roll over cracks, gravel and grass. On most belt and gear-drive boards you can swap wheel types later, but hub motors are locked to their wheels forever, so choose carefully if a hub deal tempts you.

Weight, mostly. Bigger batteries mean more miles but a heavier board, and a 30 lb long-range build is no fun to carry when it runs dry. Expect real range around two thirds of the claim, and use the electric skateboard finder to filter by battery watt hours and weight together so you get the balance right.

Most boards have a beginner mode that caps speed and softens acceleration, so do not be scared off by a fast board at a good price, just leave it in the slow mode while you learn.
