With a very long 40.4-mile range and a fast top speed of 18.6 mph, the Segway Ninebot Max wants to make an impression. Segway is a brand with a lot of customer loyalty and this scooter shows it’s well-earned. Features like the newly-upgraded 10-inch tires, smart battery management system, and great braking system ensure a smooth, safe ride. If you’re looking for a scooter that goes the distance and can go fast, the Segway Ninebot Max is a great fit.

Motor and battery

This top-rated electric scooter is powered by a 350W brushless motor and rear-wheel drive, which gets you better acceleration and stability. The 551Wh lithium batteries power the motor and if you’re cautious about safety, you’ll appreciate the Smart Battery Management System. This system monitors the battery status with short circuit protection, discharging protection, temperature protection, and more. You can rest assured that the battery is being used safely and will last longer. The 3A fast charge built-in charger doesn’t need an adapter, so you can charge just about anywhere. A full charge takes about 6 hours.

At its fastest, the scooter can get up to 18.6 mph. As with all scooters, that depends on your weight, the terrain, and other environmental factors. If you care more about range, the Ninebot Max can travel up to 40.4 miles, which is great for commuters. It can also climb hills with grades up to 20%.

Construction

This scooter from Segway is durable. The frame is made from aluminum alloy and can hold up to 220 pounds. The scooter itself weighs around 40 pounds, so it’s not light. It is more portable than many other scooters on the market thanks to its folding system, however.

There’s just one step, so it folds up in mere seconds. You can carry it on a bus, train, or store it in the trunk of a car. The other noteworthy construction feature is the platform. It’s fairly wide, so it’s a good fit for younger people and adults. It has an anti-slip surface, so you’ll feel secure.

Next, let’s talk about the tires. They are newly-upgraded from the previous Segway Ninebot models. At 10 inches, they’re a good size for rougher terrain. They’re also self-healing, which is a unique feature. There’s a healing sealant on the inside of both tires, so if the tires are punctured, this sealant automatically fills up gaps as big as 6mm in diameter!

You never know when you’ll be riding over broken glass, sharp rocks, and other objects that could disrupt your fun, but with the self-healing pneumatic tires on this scooter, you don’t need to worry.

Braking and lighting

The Segway Ninebot Max has two breaks: a front-wheel mechanical drum brake and a back-wheel regenerative electric brake. Having both brakes gives you more control, better stability, and more safety. Regenerative brake systems are energy-efficient and make the most out of your battery. As you brake, the scooter distributes that energy as needed.

Lighting is also important when it comes to rider safety. There are two LED headlights, rear lights, and reflective stickers. Riding at night is inherently risky, but with the 2.5w high-brightness LEDs, you increase your visibility and you can see better, as well.

Riding modes and app

The LED display on this electric scooter gives you total control. Choose from three riding modes - Eco, Standard, and Sports - to customize your ride. There’s also a power-assist function that pushes the scooter when you’re not riding. Check your maintenance signals and power levels with the display, too. There’s also Bluetooth capabilities, so you can connect to the Segway-Ninebot app to see millage and other stats. It’s available on Android and iOS. Be sure to install any software updates as they come out.

Customer service

The Segway Ninebot Max has a limited warranty. For the vehicle body, the warranty covers 1 year. Other components, including the charger and battery pack, have 180 days. Components subject to wear like the fender, handlebars, and headlight are covered for 90 days. On the Segway website, you can contact customer service, service and technical support, and so on. There’s also a number you can call for technical support.

Downsides

This electric scooter represents an upgrade from the previous ES2 and ES4 Ninebot models (click here to read the review of the ES4). However, with a more powerful motor and battery system, you get a heavier weight. That’s a problem if you need to carry your scooter around at any point. The weight load capacity (220 pounds) is also not any better than the prior models. Beyond that, there aren’t any glaring flaws with this e-scooter.

Who should buy the Segway Ninebot MAX?

If you like the previous Ninebots but want something more from your scooter, the Segway Ninebot Max could be perfect for you. It has good top speed and a very long range, so you can go for thrilling or relaxing rides. Segway recommends that riders be at least 14 years old, which makes sense. The scooter is on the heavy side, so younger people would have trouble carrying it around. If your commute doesn’t require you to carry the scooter very often, the Segway Ninebot Max is a good choice.

Final verdict

The Segway Ninebot Max offers the longest range yet of these Segway scooters. It has a powerful battery, better acceleration, and great features like self-healing tires and an impressive display and app. Fly over rougher terrain with ease and maintain stability and control thanks to great brakes and durable construction.

Considering the quality of this scooter, the price is pretty reasonable. Whether you’re upgrading your electric scooter or buying your first one, you should definitely consider getting the Segway Ninebot Max.
