Introduction

There are many factors you may want to consider before purchasing an electric scooter. Everything from power and speed to safety features and warranty needs to be taken into account to make sure you’re getting the best value for your dollars.

But in a market filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of options to choose from, taking the time to compare the pros and cons of different scooters can be exhausting. So, we are going to do it for you.

This article is going to examine ZERO 9, a mid-tier electric scooter. Continue reading to see what benefits (and possible drawbacks) the ZERO 9 has to offer.

Speed and Acceleration

The ZERO 9 is part of the ZERO series. It has a slightly better motor than the ZERO 8, with 600W compared to the ZERO 8’s 500W motor. This gives it a little bit of a jump in top speeds as the ZERO 9 should be able to achieve speeds of 22-24 MPH in ideal conditions.

This motor is the same wattage as the EMOVE Cruiser, but the ZERO 9 still can’t quite reach the top speeds that the Cruiser can. The Cruiser is about 10 lbs heavier than the ZERO 9 and costs a couple of hundred dollars more so you have to weigh the benefits of each before making a true comparison.

The 600W motor has pretty decent acceleration. You should be able to reach 18 MPH pretty quickly, and after that, the ZERO 9 will creep towards its top speed. Most riders find that the ZERO 9 can climb most hills pretty easily, but this will vary with the rider’s weight.

The ZERO 9 also has a stronger power output than the ZERO 8 with a 25A controller. This is mainly what allows it to reach higher speeds.

Battery and Range

The battery on the ZERO 9 is essentially the same as the ZERO 8. It’s a 48V 13Ah LG lithium-ion battery that has a range of 22-25 miles. While not the greatest range for its price, it should be reliable in dry conditions and should be able to reach most destinations for a typical commute.

The range is also good for leisure rides. If you’re moving at 20 MPH you can get an hour’s ride with each charge. RevRides does sell a lightning charger for its scooters so you can reduce your charging time in-between rides. They do note that you should use the lightning charger sparingly, as it can reduce your battery’s performance over time.

A scooter with a comparable battery range is the Mercane WIDEWHEEL PRO, although the WIDEWHEEL PRO does have two 500W motors to power and is heavier so it needs a little extra juice to keep things moving.

Suspension and Ride Quality

The ZERO 9 suspension is the same as the ZERO 8, with both front and rear spring suspension. This should be sufficient enough to make a smooth ride over most urban terrain. It could probably handle some lighter off-roading on well-traveled paths with dense dirt, but its capabilities in that area are probably limited. The spring suspension system has a nice balance of stiffness and give.

One major upgrade to the ZERO 9 is that both the front and back tires are both pneumatic, which makes riding over paved roads incredibly smooth. Having two pneumatic tires, as opposed to the ZERO 8’s single front pneumatic tire, makes a big difference in riding quality that you’ll be sure to notice and appreciate.

Portability

Although the ZERO 9 does have some upgrades from the ZERO 8, this is apparently not enough to add any discernable weight difference. Weighing in at 40 lbs, the ZERO 9 is relatively light for its power class. 40 lbs may not be something you want to carry around all day, but it’s definitely light enough to carry up to your office or apartment. Plus, you can always purchase a shoulder strap to make carrying easier.

The ZERO 9 folds where the steering column meets the deck to become fairly compact. The handlebars also fold in so that it isn’t as wide if you need to take it on a bus or fit it in a car. When completely folded, the ZERO 9 is 43x7.5x14.5 inches (LxWxH). This makes it rather easy to fit in most places that you may need to take your scooter.

Build Quality and Safety

The ZERO brand has a solid reputation and is known for building high-quality electric scooters. The ZERO 9 is no different, and you can expect your scooter to remain durable and safe after hundreds of miles of use. The deck is spacious at 20.5 x 7.7 inches so you can remain comfortable on longer rides.

The ZERO 9 has a dual braking system with a disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the back. Disc brakes are typically considered to be the best kind of brake available, so combined with the rear drum brake the ZERO 9 can stop with relative ease. Like the ZERO 8, the ZERO 9 is not water-resistant so you probably won’t be doing any braking in the rain at all.

The ZERO 9 comes with some interesting light features. In addition to its front headlights and easily-visible rear light, the ZERO 9 has a blue light under glow that shines beneath the deck so that you are also visible from the sides and it provides a nice esthetic. The lights are mounted kind of low, however, so you may want to purchase additional lighting for your scooter.

The LCD shows the rider the mileage, speed, and battery power of the scooter so that you can always be in control while riding. There are also three different riding modes to choose from so that you can optimize the scooter’s battery usage according to your trip. The LCD also allows the user to control the lights.

Support and Warranty

RevRides provides a 12-month limited warranty on all of their electric vehicles. This only covers issues caused by manufacturing errors and doesn’t cover problems that arise from water damage or collisions.

They do note on their website that they will work with any customer who isn’t 100% satisfied to find a solution, and they offer free technical advice through their support team. Plus, shipping is free on all orders over $25 so that’s a bonus.

Who Should Buy the ZERO 9?

The ZERO 9 only comes with a handful of upgrades from the ZERO 8 and that comes with an additional $400 on the final price. Do the upgrades warrant such a drastic price rise? We don’t think so, and for this reason, we have to give it 7.9 out of 10 points. While it is a nicely made scooter, the features just aren’t enough to justify the high price.

You can get the Apollo City for $100 cheaper and it’s basically the same scooter. We do think that the ZERO 9 has efficient brakes, good suspension as a result of the two pneumatic tires, and decent power so all in all, it is a solid scooter. The ZERO 9 is a good purchase for new or experienced riders who want to shell out a few extra dollars for some added features.

If your pockets are deep and you want a monstrous high-end e-scooter, we recommend you check out the Zero 10X from the same product line. Another dual-motor scooter from the same line-up with a less scary price tag is the Zero 8X.
