Over the latest few years, electric scooters have quickly become an increasingly common form of transportation as commuters seek to find affordable ways to travel around their home cities.

With the use of these two-wheeled, high-speed scooters, many commuters find they can save money while still making good time as they travel to and from their destinations.

Of course, there are many models on the market, but this review will focus on the Segway Ninebot ES2 and all it has to offer compared to other similar electric scooters.

Segway Ninebot ES2 Overview

Although it may not be a top-of-the-line model, the Segway Ninebot ES2 has gained quite a bit of notoriety in the e-scooter commuter.

This scooter is highly recognizable in the industry and has a good design and is built with quality materials. However, the device's features fall short of the competition, especially when the higher price tag is considered due to the Segway name.

Nevertheless, this electric scooter does perform fairly well and it does have decent, but not amazing, speed and acceleration capabilities.

So with that said, let’s take a look at a few key features and components of the Segway Ninebot ES2.

Speed, Acceleration, And Motor Power

If you are looking for a good-quality electric scooter for your commutes, speed is likely a primary factor that will impact your choice. After all, you need to know that you can get where you need to go on time.

In our performance tests, the Segway Ninebot ES2 reached a top speed of about 15 miles per hour, which falls short of many other similar Segway models like the newer Ninebot ES4 or the long-range Ninebot MAX.

The acceleration is equally, if not more, disappointing than the maximum speed on this scooter.

The Segway Ninebot ES2 takes approximately 7.1 seconds to go from 0 to 16 mph. This is much slower than the competition and even some of the more affordable models on the market.

The motor offers a considerable 300 watts but clearly doesn’t generate much in terms of speed or acceleration. On the other hand, the motor is nearly silent, which is a perk for anyone who wants minimal noise throughout the course of their next scooter ride.

Battery And Range

Unfortunately, for those seeking a durable battery with long-lasting power, the Segway Ninebot ES2 falls short once again, offering no more than about 187 watt-hours of battery capacity. Sticking to the theme of unimpressive features, this range is relatively short, clocking in at only about 9.8 miles per charge.

The poor battery capacity contributes to this insufficient range, which is nearly five miles shorter than most comparable e-scooter models.

Suspension And Ride Quality

True to the rest of its features, the Segway Ninebot ES2 continues to offer a sub-par ride quality thanks to its (lack of) integrated suspension system, which makes even the smallest bumps noticeable while riding.

On top of that, the hard solid rubber tires don’t help matters as any time there is an obstacle, no matter how small, the rider is going to feel the impact.

On the other hand, when riding on smooth roads and asphalt, the Segway Ninebot ES2 will still offer a decent ride with solid, sturdy control.

Portability And Weight

The Segway Ninebot ES2 manages to be portable overall but is held back by its lengthy stem, which might make it a bit more cumbersome to carry around in tighter quarters. With that said, the scooter’s stem does fold down. However, the handlebars cannot be collapsed like you see in e.g. the Apollo Light.

So with that in mind, this scooter can be difficult to fit in the trunk of a car. And unfortunately, due to the scooter's folding diameter and weight, it might be a bit more difficult for the average adult to carry it in one hand.

However, at 28 lbs., the scooter does have the advantage of being lighter than most other models on the market. Its poor storage design, on the other hand, takes away from this compact benefit.

Build Quality And Safety

Next up, we finally have an area where the Segway Ninebot ES2 actually offers a bit of greatness in the fact that it has a slim, stylish design, and is made from high-quality parts and materials that are designed to be lightweight

This build reflects the quality of the Segway brand itself and even exceeds quite a few competitors in terms of quality and physical design.

Additionally, the Ninebot ES2 comes with detailed safety precautions in its manuals, as well as simple, easy assembly instructions out of the box.

A few other prominent safety features are the front, side, and rear LED lights and the high-quality braking system.

Moreover, the scooter has anti-slip rubber to keep your feet firmly planted on your scooter, as well as an overheating prevention system for its battery.

Warranty And Customer Support

As another highlight of this model, the ES2 comes with a Segway warranty, which meets and exceeds most industry standards.

The cosmetic wear and tear and replacement parts are covered by a 3 months warranty. The frame has a full year of coverage, and the battery is covered for half a year.

For anyone who doubts this scooter's quality, this warranty offering does offer a bit of peace of mind.

Segway Ninebot ES2 Vs. ES4 Vs. MAX

Segway Ninebot ES2 vs ES4 vs MAX

With all the features in mind on the Segway Ninebot ES2, it's clear that better options do exist on the market. In fact, there are several alternative Ninebot models that offer much better performance.

In particular, the ES4 and MAX models are worth considering if you aren't completely sold on the ES2.

The Ninebot ES4 is far more powerful than the ES2 with an 800-watt motor, which is much more powerful than the ES2. This is largely due to an extra battery, which allows for a commute of up to 28 miles; a full 21 miles longer than the ES2!

While both the ES4 and ES2 tend to perform better on flatter ground than on bumpy rides, the ES4 provides a much better ride experience overall and can achieve 19 mph and accelerate much faster than the ES2.

However, the price reflects these advantages as it is more expensive overall.

The MAX model takes the lackluster elements of the ES2 and improves them immensely. The 40.4-mile range on this scooter and a top speed of 18.6 mph immediately set it above the ES2 purely in commuting capabilities.

Additionally, the ride has a longer battery life with a built-in charger for charging while on the go.

While the scooter is heavier than other models like the ES2, it offers much better suspension, allowing riders to cruise over almost any type of terrain.

Both choices are improvements over the ES2, which falls short in terms of features. However, they are both more expensive than the ES2 given their higher quality and performance capabilities.

Final Verdict - The Segway Ninebot ES2

As you can see by now, the Segway Ninebot ES2 falls short in several critical areas while still boasting a rather high price tag thanks to its brand name.

Due to its lack of range, speed, and overall riding experience, depending on your specific needs, it might be worth shopping around for a scooter that offers better performance.

However, if you decide that the Segway Ninebot ES2 is right for, you can rest assured knowing that it’s built using high-quality materials that are lightweight, and designed to keep your safe while cruising around town!
